This I CAN READ title offers an exciting story of history and adventure. It is Level 3 with a more complex theme and challenging words, perfect for the newly independent reader.
In the spring of 1850, Faiths family begins their journey to California in a covered wagon. Her pet hen, Josefina, too old to lay eggs and too tough to eat, keeps her company and shares the hardships on the way. Faith makes quilt squares recording all the events of their trip. When robbers creep into their camp at night, Josefina squawks loudly and chases them away. When she falls in the river as they were crossing it, Adam jumps in to save her. She then surprises him with an egg. Ma helps Faith put together all the patchwork pieces she has made, and Faith sleeps happily under her Josefina story quilt.
